What a move-in clean is for
A previous occupant's idea of clean and yours are rarely the same, and a listing photo tells you nothing about the inside of a drawer.
Even a professionally cleaned property that has sat vacant for a few weeks collects dust — construction dust if there has been work done, ordinary settled dust otherwise, and in North Texas summers, a fine layer from the return air pulling through an empty house.
The point of cleaning before you move in is access. Once the boxes arrive, the inside of the pantry is full, the closet floors are covered and the space behind the refrigerator is unreachable for the next several years. Cleaning while the property is empty is the difference between cleaning the house and cleaning what you can still see.
Some builders and property managers provide a final clean. It is usually a surface pass aimed at handover, not the inside of cabinetry and appliances. Worth asking what it covered before assuming you can skip this.

If the property is a new build or has just come out of a remodel, the finer construction dust needs post-construction cleaning rather than a standard move-in clean — it settles repeatedly and needs a different approach.

When to schedule it
Move-in cleans are one of the few services where the date genuinely matters more than the duration.
After closing, before the movers
The ideal slot is the day you get keys or the day after. You want the property empty, powered and with water running.
Confirm utilities are on
We need water and electricity. A vacant property with the water shut off cannot be cleaned properly, and that is worth checking before the date is locked.
Leave a gap before delivery
Try not to book furniture delivery for the same morning. Cleaning around a moving crew slows both teams down and defeats the purpose of an empty house.

Plenty of customers book a move-out clean on the property they are leaving and a move-in clean on the one they are taking. They are different services with different goals — one is aimed at a landlord's walk-through, the other at your first night in the house.

About move-in cleaning
- Should I clean before or after moving furniture in?
- Before, without much doubt. Cabinet interiors, closet floors and the space behind appliances are only accessible while the home is empty. Once boxes are in place, most of that scope is gone.
- Is a move-in clean the same as a deep clean?
- They overlap but are not the same. A deep clean has to work around belongings in a home somebody lives in. A move-in clean starts from an empty property, which is what makes cabinet, drawer, appliance and closet interiors reachable at all.
- The listing said it was professionally cleaned. Do I still need this?
- Often, yes. Pre-sale and handover cleans are usually surface passes for photographs and walk-throughs. They rarely include the inside of cabinetry, the inside of appliances or closet floors. Check what was actually done.
- Can you clean an apartment before move-in?
- Yes, and it is a common booking. Apartment move-in cleans focus heavily on kitchen cabinetry, appliance interiors and bathroom detail, since those are where previous-tenant residue tends to survive a turnover clean.
- How long does it take?
- Longer than a standard clean of the same home, because the interiors add substantial time. Size, bathroom count and the condition the previous occupant left it in all matter.
