Moving in and out

Should you hire cleaners before moving into a house?

In most cases yes, and the reason is not hygiene anxiety about the previous occupant. It is access — a short window where parts of the house are reachable that will not be again for years.

What the empty window actually buys

Once the boxes arrive, the pantry is full, closet floors are covered, the space behind the refrigerator is unreachable and the top shelf of every cabinet has something on it. Most of those will not be genuinely accessible again until the next time you move.

That is the argument for cleaning before rather than after. It is not that an occupied house cannot be cleaned well — it is that a specific set of surfaces is only available now.

The secondary argument is simpler: unpacking into clean cabinets is a better experience than unpacking into someone else's crumbs, and doing it afterward means taking everything out again.

What gets cleaned that a normal visit would not reach

  • Inside every kitchen cabinet and drawer, including the shelf edges
  • Inside the refrigerator and freezer, including door seals
  • Inside the oven and the dishwasher
  • Behind and beside appliances that pull out
  • Closet shelving, rods and closet floors
  • Inside bathroom vanities and any medicine cabinet
  • Window tracks and sills without furniture in the way
  • Floor perimeters and corners in every room

When you can reasonably skip it

There are cases where a move-in clean is not the best use of money, and it is worth naming them.

If the property is a new build, what it needs is post-construction cleaning, not a move-in clean. Fine construction dust behaves differently and keeps settling for days, so a single move-in visit will not finish the job.

If the seller or previous tenant genuinely deep cleaned it and you can see that cabinet interiors and appliance interiors were done, then a standard first visit after you move in may be enough.

If you are moving into a small unit you can do yourself in an afternoon, and you have that afternoon, then doing it yourself while it is empty captures most of the benefit.

Getting the timing right

  1. After closing or key handover

The ideal slot is the day you get keys or the day after, with the property empty and both water and power on.

  2. Check utilities first

A vacant property with the water shut off cannot be cleaned properly. Confirm before locking in a date.

  3. Leave a gap before delivery

Try not to book furniture delivery for the same morning. Cleaning around a moving crew slows both teams and defeats the point of an empty house.

"It was professionally cleaned" usually means less than you think

Pre-sale and handover cleans are typically surface passes aimed at photographs and walk-throughs. They rarely include the inside of cabinetry, the inside of appliances or closet floors.

Ask what was actually done. Then open a cabinet and the oven and check for yourself — it takes thirty seconds and it settles the question.

Questions

Common questions

Is a move-in clean the same as a deep clean?
They overlap but they are not the same. A deep clean works around belongings in an occupied home. A move-in clean assumes an empty property and prioritizes interiors — inside cabinets, drawers, appliances and closets.
Can I book it for an apartment?
Yes, and it is a common booking. Apartment move-in cleans focus heavily on kitchen cabinetry, appliance interiors and bathroom detail, since that is where previous-tenant residue most often survives a turnover clean.
How long does it take?
Longer than a standard clean of the same property, because the interiors add substantial time. Size, bathroom count and the condition the previous occupant left it in all matter.
Should I do it before or after painting?
After. Sanding dust and paint spatter land on every horizontal surface, so cleaning before the painters finish means cleaning twice.
