Airbnb turnover vs move-out cleaning
Both services hand a property from one occupant to the next. Beyond that they have almost nothing in common — one works around furniture on a four-hour clock, the other works through an empty property against an inspection list.
The short answer
- Airbnb turnover
- A turnover resets a furnished, staged property for a guest arriving today.
- Move-out clean
- A move-out clean strips an empty property to an inspection standard.
Side by side
| Point of comparison | Airbnb turnover | Move-out clean |
|---|---|---|
| Property state | Fully furnished and staged. | Empty, or should be. |
| Time available | Hours. Often between an 11 AM checkout and a 4 PM check-in. | A normal scheduled visit, usually a full booking. |
| Frequency | Every few days. | Once, at the end of a tenancy or ownership. |
| Cabinet interiors | Spot-checked for guest leftovers, not emptied and cleaned. | Every cabinet and drawer cleaned inside. |
| Appliance interiors | Microwave, coffee maker and toaster checked. Refrigerator cleared of guest food. | Oven, refrigerator and dishwasher cleaned inside, thoroughly. |
| Linens | Stripped and remade every turn. | Not applicable — the property is empty. |
| Staging | Central. Towels, cushions, curtains, welcome materials. | None. Nothing is left in the property. |
| Judged by | A guest, and then a public review. | A property manager, landlord or buyer with a checklist. |
| Biggest risk | A hair, a streak or a leftover item generating a bad review. | A missed oven or cabinet interior generating a deposit deduction. |
Where hosts and landlords get them confused
The confusion usually goes one way: someone books a turnover-style clean when they actually need a move-out clean, most often at the end of a long-term guest stay or when a short-term rental is being handed back to an owner.
The tell is whether the property is going to be inspected against a list. If someone is going to open the oven, pull out the refrigerator drawers and check inside every cabinet, you need move-out scope. If someone is going to sleep there tonight and review it tomorrow, you need turnover scope.
There is also a third case that catches short-term rental owners out: a property coming off the short-term market and going onto a long-term lease. That is a make-ready, not a turnover — see rental property cleaning.

Questions
Common questions
- My short-term guest stayed three months. Which service do I need?
- Almost certainly move-out scope. A long stay puts real use into cabinet interiors, appliance interiors and bathroom detail, none of which a turnover is scheduled to address.
- Can a turnover include oven and refrigerator interiors?
- They can be added, but they take real time and the turnover window is usually short. If the property needs both, that is a sign it needs a periodic deeper reset rather than a bigger turnover.
- How often should a short-term rental get a deeper clean?
- Most hosts schedule one periodically between busy stretches, in addition to routine turnovers. See how often a short-term rental should be professionally cleaned.
- I am moving my rental from short-term to long-term. What do I book?
- A rental property make-ready. The goal is a unit that photographs well and shows well to a prospective tenant, which is a different target from either of the services here.
