Home cleaning explained
Should you clean before your cleaner arrives?
No. But there is a version of preparation that meaningfully improves what you get, and it is worth knowing which is which — one takes ten minutes and the other takes your whole evening for nothing.

Cleaning before is pointless. Tidying before is not.
Wiping counters, scrubbing a sink or mopping a floor before a cleaner arrives is straightforwardly wasted effort. It is the work you are paying for, and doing it yourself first does not make the professional pass better.
Tidying is a different thing entirely. Clearing a surface is not cleaning it — it is removing the obstacle between a cleaner and the surface. A cleaner working around eleven objects on a counter cleans eleven small patches. A cleaner working on a clear counter cleans a counter.
That is the whole distinction, and it is worth ten minutes.
The ten-minute version
None of this is cleaning. All of it makes a measurable difference to the result.
Surfaces
- Clear kitchen counters of mail, chargers and paperwork
- Clear bathroom vanity tops
- Clear dresser and nightstand tops
- Take dishes out of the sink
- Clear the dining table
Floors
- Pick up clothes, shoes and toys
- Move laundry baskets out of walkways
- Clear the floor of any room you want vacuumed properly
- Move small rugs you would rather were not lifted
Access and safety
- Confirm how we get in — code, lockbox, garage
- Secure pets somewhere out of the way
- Put away anything valuable or fragile you would rather nobody moved
- Leave out any specific product you want used on a surface
- Note anything you want prioritized
What not to bother with
- Wiping down before we arrive. It is the job.
- Vacuuming. Also the job.
- Hiding normal mess. Nobody is judging a lived-in house. Cleaners have seen everything.
- Emptying the trash. We do it.
- Pre-treating the shower. If it needs pre-treatment, the visit needs to be a deep clean rather than a standard one — tell us instead.
The one thing worth doing between visits
Dry your shower glass after use. In North Texas, that single habit prevents most hard-water scale — which is the most common thing customers ask us to fix, and the slowest thing to reverse once it has set.
A squeegee or a towel takes fifteen seconds and saves an hour of descaling later.
Questions
Common questions
- Will cleaners move my belongings?
- Reachable items get moved, cleaned under and put back. Paperwork, valuables and anything personal are worked around rather than relocated. If you would rather something was not touched, say so or put it away.
- What should I do with pets?
- Secure them somewhere out of the way. It is safer for them, less stressful, and it lets the crew work without pausing. Tell us at booking that there are pets so the visit is sized properly.
- Do I need to be home?
- No. Most recurring customers give us a door code, lockbox or garage entry. See do you need to be home during a cleaning.
- Is it rude to leave the house messy?
- No. There is a difference between a messy house and a cluttered surface. The first is normal; the second just slows the work down, which is why tidying helps.
